Early Career Researchers’ (ECR) Sustainability Training School (STS)
20.07.2023
AGMOW member Liv Nielsen, recently attended the Early Career Researcher (ECR) Sustainability Training School (STS) held at the University of Warwick.
Organized by the Institute for Global Sustainable Development (IGSD), in partnership with the EUTOPIA Consortium, the school's aim was to foster skills development and facilitate idea exchange for researchers focusing on sustainable development and resilience worldwide.
During the workshop, Liv had the opportunity to present her PhD project, Exploring Environmental Stewardship as an Ordering Domain for Transnational Climate Governance. In her presentation, she underscored the critical role of communal resilience and the pressing demand for innovative, cooperative governance structures. In addition, Liv received valuable and insightful feedback from a diverse group of researchers from 26 different countries, each contributing their unique interdisciplinary perspectives.
The ECR workshop extended beyond academic presentations. It was a comprehensive learning platform addressing sustainability and resilience. Key aspects of training included public engagement, design thinking policy impact, and career pathways for early career researchers. Liv valued the chance to learn from her fellow ECRs on a range of topics, including urban green spaces, health perceptions among indigenous peoples, and the changing legal norms of environmentalism. She left the workshop equipped with insights on translating academic work to the policy level and building effective collaborations.
Additionally, Liv got the opportunity to collaborate with Hannah Oh, Kyungpook National University, Michael Lim, University of Glasgow, and Thipphaphone Xayavong, University of Warwick on an interdisciplinary project titled Reclaiming Resilience. The project focuses on communal resilience and utilizes participatory filmmaking in engaging local communities directly in the research process. A testament to the STS’s effectiveness in promoting both theoretical learning and practical collaboration, the project reflects the vibrant, cooperative spirit of the ECR STS.
The Sustainability Training School, organized by AGMOW member Elena Korosteleva, will take place annually. This recent event marked its inaugural occurrence.
